Seaweeds: The hidden champions of coastal ecosytems

Show notes

Welcome back to another episode of Ocean Insight! Today I am tuning in from the western African shores of Senegal, where we virtually had a lovely chat with Waly Ndiaye, Birgit Quack, Florian Weinberger, and Anna Fricke who are partnering in the CLIMALG_SN project in Senegal.

The aim of the CLIMALG_SN project is to increase knowledge about the diversity function and economic potential of, often undeservingly termed, "seaweeds", in Senegal. Local and traditional knowledge plays a key role in identifying the more than 400 species of seaweeds known, and it also plays an important factor in shaping the perception of those versatile and beneficial plants.

We also briefly touched upon the efforts it takes to conduct fieldwork and stay in touch with stakeholders in times of COVID-19. From designing the project itself to producing outputs that reach a broader audience.
