Our Ocean and Coasts in COVID-19
Show notes
In this episode we talk to Dr. David Obura, founding director of CORDIO east Africa, about the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on local NGOs and coastal communities in Eastern Africa. Luckily, and due to large external grants, CORDIO itself remained relatively unaffected by the current pandemic. Still, fieldwork and travel were severely affected as interactions with coastal communities was very limited. The travel restrictions also impacted the North-South exchange for a long period of time. It also created an interesting dynamic that opened some opportunities for local scientists to take over more responsibilities from cooperation partners. As tourism was effectively shut down small local communities were hit very hart. Strict curfews also effectively isolated many of them and prevented access to markets.
